Guidelines for the Director of a New Teacher Induction Program

The administrator plays a vital role in the implementation of a new teacher induction program. Good instructional leaders make mentoring a priority for school success and growth. When asked what made their first year successful, many new teachers credit the person or administrator in charge of the induction program.

Listed below are some attributes that the person in charge of the induction program should exhibit. Facilitating a collaborative planning process may include other stake holders which is essential to achieving optimal results.

Observation of Teaching

Provides time for teachers to observe

Establishes resources available to allow observations to take place

Provides inservice training and assistance with peer coaches and observations


Roles and Resources

Defines the role of both the mentor and the new teacher

Provides coaching techniques for the mentor

Monitors new teachers and answers questions

Establishes evaluation tools for participants

Provides positive and creative resources


Leadership and Growth

Selects and assigns mentors based on specific criteria

Leads in an on going process which cultivates leaders

Offers administrative support that fosters growth.


Responsibility

Is ethically responsible, including the need for confidentiality

Maintains the role of instructional leader while working cooperatively with the mentors and new teachers

Uses standards based formative assessments.
