MENTOR QUALIFICATIONS

In order to be eligible to serve as a mentor, the teacher must:

1. Be a tenured teacher.

2. Have taught for 5 years.

3. Have received mentor training including the following courses:

Effective teaching

Peer coaching

4. Have received the highest evaluation ratings.

The following are the desired mentor characteristics and skills needed for success as a mentor.

Characteristics:

Mentors must be:

• Trustworthy
• Nurturing
• Have integrity
• Confidential
• Positive

Skills:

Mentors must have the ability to:

• Communicate clearly and positively
• Observe teaching and discuss observations objectively and non judgmentally
• Plan in advance for teaching and mentoring work to minimize the negative impact on the mentor's own students and maximize the positive impact on the protege's students
• Excellence in teaching, modelling best practices
• Provide consistent follow up support and guidance to the protege
• Flexibility
• Serve as staff developer who is facilitator of adult learning
• be a friend, a good listener and communicator
• Be an advocate for new teachers and mentoring.
  
  

MENTOR CERTIFICATION

Inservice workshops throughout the school year provide mentor preparation, training, and support for current mentors and those desiring to be mentors. These are required for mentor certification.

MENTORING INCENTIVES

Contact hour credit for profesional growth requirements or optional graduate credit is offered for participation in the workshops.
